Le Parfait Café: Mastering the Art of French Press Brewing

Brewing coffee with a French Press is more than just a simple process—it’s a ritual that unlocks the rich, full-bodied flavors of your coffee beans. Many are misled into thinking that pressing the plunger all the way down is essential—a common myth spread by some big bosses and YouTubers—but this often results in a gritty, bitter brew. In truth, the magic lies in careful timing and gentle flavor extraction, delivering a smooth, clean cup without unwanted residue. Here’s how to brew the perfect French Press coffee—rich, balanced, and free from grit.

Materials Needed

  • French Press Cup (1 cup 230ml)
  • Ground Coffee: 15 grams (medium-coarse grind)
  • Water: 230 ml, heated to 92–94°C (just off the boil)
  • Kettle or pot for boiling water
  • Handheld digital thermometer (optional)

Instruction

  1. Boil Water
    • Start with fresh, filtered water. Boil it using a kettle or hot water dispenser, which typically reaches a boiling point of 95-96°C.
    • Once boiled, let the water sit for a minute to cool down to the ideal brewing temperature of 92-94°C. Use a handheld digital thermometer to check the temperature if available.
  2. Prepare the ground coffee
    • While boiling the water, grind your coffee beans to a medium-coarse size suitable for French Press brewing.
    • If you’re using pre-ground coffee, weigh out the desired amount
  3. Add Coffee
    • Place 15 grams of medium-coarse coffee grounds into the French Press.
  4. Bloom (Pre-Infusion)
    • Pour 15–30 grams of hot water evenly over the grounds to wet them thoroughly. Let it sit for about 30 seconds, until the top surface begins to look dry and bubbling slows or stops.
  5. Add Remaining Water
    • Slowly pour in the remaining hot water (about 190–200 ml) until you reach a total of 230 ml.
  6. Position Screen Mesh
    • Place the plunger screen just on top of the coffee liquid and floating grounds, without pressing down. This prevents fine particles from moving into the liquid but allows the coffee to steep evenly.
  7. Brewing Time
    • Let the coffee steep for 3–5 minutes. During this time, the grounds will gradually sink to the bottom on their own.
  8. Pour the Coffee
    • Hold the screen in position (don’t press it down) and gently pour out the coffee. This method reduces the amount of fine dust, giving you a cleaner cup.
  9. Enjoy Your Coffee
    • Voilà! A well-crafted French Press coffee with balanced sweetness and a clean finish.

Good to know

  • This recipe is based on a 1-cup (230 ml) French Press with nominal 1 : 15 ratio. To adjust for a larger French Press, use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1 part coffee to 12–19 parts water, depending on your taste preference. For example:
    • For a stronger brew, use a 1:12 ratio.
    • For a lighter brew, use a 1:19 ratio.
  • Adjust accordingly based on the size of your French Press and your personal flavor preference.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use fresh, filtered water to enhance the taste.
  • Pre-warm your French Press cup by rinsing it with hot water before brewing to maintain the coffee temperature.
  • Adjust the water quantity to your taste preference. More water for a milder coffee, less water for a stronger brew.
